Police in Ghana have arrested three Nigerian men suspected of belonging to a criminal group accused of robbing bank customers in Kumasi and nearby communities.
The suspects were identified as Aboy Promise, 30; Favour Uwalaka, 45; and Kingsley, also known as KC, 35.
The Ashanti Regional Police Command said the arrests followed an intelligence-led operation carried out late on October 31, 2026, by a special police team involving officers from the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit of the Criminal Investigations Department and the Accra Regional Police Intelligence Directorate.
According to a statement signed by the command’s Public Affairs Unit head, Superintendent Godwin Ahianyo, two of the suspects, Aboy Promise and Favour Uwalaka, were arrested at a hotel in Moshie Zongo, Kumasi.
A search of their rooms reportedly led to the recovery of GH¢1,600, assorted mobile phones, a Royal motorcycle and a master key suspected to have been used to gain access to vehicles belonging to bank customers.
How the alleged robbery group operated
Police said preliminary investigations indicated that the suspects monitored banking premises and identified customers who withdrew large amounts of money.
They allegedly followed the customers before attacking and robbing them. The group was also accused of breaking into unattended vehicles belonging to bank customers and stealing cash kept inside.
During interrogation, the two arrested men reportedly mentioned two alleged accomplices, identified as Chinedu, also known as Alhaji, and Kingsley, known as KC.
The police subsequently took the suspects to another hotel in Dechemso, a suburb of Kumasi, where Kingsley was arrested.
However, Chinedu remains at large, according to the police.
The command said the suspects reportedly admitted to robbing a customer of GH¢15,000 at Asokore Mampong on October 27 after the victim withdrew the money from Kwamang Rural Bank.
Police also linked the suspects to alleged robberies around the Atonsu branch of Fidelity Bank, the Ahodwo branch of Access Bank and other locations in Kumasi and its surrounding areas.
The three Nigerians are assisting with investigations, while police have appealed to the public to provide credible information that could lead to the arrest of the fourth suspect.
The Ghana Police Service advised bank customers to remain alert when withdrawing large sums of money and when leaving banking premises.
The allegations are subject to investigation and do not amount to a conviction.
