Nathan Thomas has entered the history books after becoming the youngest male professor ever recorded, achieving the feat at just 18 years and 346 days old. His achievement ended a record that had stood for more than three centuries.
According to Guinness World Records, Thomas became a professor when he joined the faculty of Miami Dade College in the United States in August 2023, where he taught a computing and programming course known as “C for Engineers.”
What makes the story even more remarkable is that many of the students sitting in his classroom were around the same age as he was. Despite that, Thomas successfully taught engineering and programming concepts to his peers while beginning a career that most people spend decades working toward.
His achievement surpassed the record previously held by Scottish mathematician Colin Maclaurin, who became a professor at the age of 19 in 1717. Guinness World Records said Maclaurin’s mark had remained unbeaten for 306 years before Thomas broke it.
Thomas’ academic journey started unusually early. He enrolled in college at the age of 10 before later transferring to Florida International University. By the age of 18, he had already completed both a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in Electrical Engineering with honours.
Speaking about his success, Thomas encouraged young people not to compare themselves to others. He said everyone progresses at a different pace and that consistent effort eventually produces results.
His story has attracted global attention as an example of extraordinary academic achievement and the possibilities available to gifted young learners when they receive the right opportunities and support.
For many students around the world, Nathan Thomas’ journey serves as proof that age does not always define achievement and that exceptional talent can emerge much earlier than expected.
