Afrobeats star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has challenged Nigerian politicians to explain how they accumulated their wealth after former Anambra State governor Peter Obi publicly discussed his business background.

Davido reacted to a video shared by television host Rufai Oseni, in which Obi addressed questions about his wealth and assets before entering politics.

The clip resurfaced on social media on September 12, 2026, and quickly generated debate.

During the interview, Obi said he had established a business career before becoming involved in politics.

He identified his previous business activities as including a brand and market management company, a franchise for Heinz products in Nigeria and an agency arrangement with South African Breweries.

The former governor also said he worked with international companies, including Novartis, and held substantial interests in banks before becoming governor of Anambra State.

Obi said the company he built later became associated with a major food retail business after he left it and his brother took over its operations.

He also recalled holding an American Express Platinum card dating back to 1987, using the account to illustrate that his financial standing predated his political career.

During the interview, Obi said entering politics had made him financially poorer, although he maintained that he was glad to have entered public service.

Oseni subsequently shared the interview clip and posed a broader question about wealth transparency among Nigerian politicians.

“Can every Nigerian politician tell us how they made their money like this?” he asked.

Davido responded to the post with a brief comment: “None of them can try it.”

His reaction has since generated discussion online, particularly because of his high-profile involvement in conversations about Nigerian politics and governance.

The exchange comes amid renewed public scrutiny of the wealth of political figures as parties and politicians prepare for the 2027 elections.

Questions about the sources of politicians’ wealth have remained a recurring issue in Nigeria, particularly where public officials accumulate substantial assets before, during or after holding political office.

Obi’s explanation addressed his own business history and was not presented as a statement about the sources of wealth of other politicians.

Davido’s comment, meanwhile, was a general reaction to Oseni’s challenge and did not identify any particular politician as having an unexplained source of wealth.

The debate has nevertheless revived calls for greater transparency and accountability in Nigeria’s political system.
